현재 한국사회는 거대한 전환의 요구 앞에 서 있다. 기후변화와 미세먼지 저감을 위한 재생에너지로의 전환, 재벌중심 경제체제에서 지역중심 사회적 경제로의 전환, 구조적 실업에 직면한 청년세대와 고령화 시대를 맞은 노인세대를 위한 보편복지로의 전환, 경쟁적 암기식 교육에서 창의성과 협동심을 키우는 생태적 교육으로의 전환, 첨단 과학기술과 디지털화에 병행하는 공동체 의식과 영성 문화로의 전환, 적대와 대립을 끝내고 협력과 상생을 추구하는 한반도 전체의 평화체제로의 전환 등이다.

이 모든 전환의 요구는 개별적으로 해결되지 않는다. 모든 변화는 서로 연결돼 있으며 각 부분의 변화가 시너지 효과를 내면서 전체의 변화를 가속화할 수 있다. 인간이 자연을 지배하며 경제가 모든 가치에 우선하고 지구와 생명을 자원으로 바라보면서 교육이 경제에 종속된 산업문명으로부터 지구에 대한 외경심, 모든 생명에 대한 존중, 자연의 용량을 초과하지 않는 지속 가능 경제, 성장중독으로부터의 탈피, 진정한 행복을 추구하는 생태문명으로의 전환이 이미 시작됐다. 중국이 2012년 “생태문명”을 공산당 당헌에 명시하고 미국의 진보정치가 2019년 “그린 빅딜”을 주창한 것은 지금의 세계가 부분적 개선만으로는 한계에 부딪쳤으며 국가 단위의 전면적 변화가 시급하다는 사실을 웅변한다.

한국생태문명회의는 학계와 시민사회를 중심으로, 생태문명을 향한 전환의 담론과 실천을 토론하는 장이다. 개별 담론과 운동은 이미 새로운 변화의 방향으로 움직이고 있다. 그러나 워낙 복잡한 사회구성과 영역화, 전문화의 경향 때문에 다른 영역으로 확산되거나 서로 소통하지 못한다. 그만큼 변화의 전망은 어둡고 실천은 무기력해지기 쉽다. 철학이 환경운동가들과 만나고 경제학이 지역과 그곳 주민들의 생활과 접목되는 것이 한국생태문명회의가 꿈꾸는 진정한 학문과 담론이다.  

2019년 열리는 한국생태문명회의는 2017년 미국 캘리포니아주 클레어몬트시에서 열린 “제1회 한국사회의 생태적 전환을 위한 국제 컨퍼런스”, 2018년 경기도 파주시에서 열린 “생태문명 국제 컨퍼런스 2018: 한반도와 동아시아의 생태적 전환”에 이은 세 번째 생태문명 국제 컨퍼런스이자 점차 증가하는 국내와 해외 참여기관들과의 네트워크를 확고하게 다지면서 한국사회에서 전환담론의 발신기지가 되고자 하는 새로운 시도이다.
